The athletic training students and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee have once again teamed up to help the less fortunate of Pike County.
Pike County is one of the poorest counties in Alabama, and for the past four years the student-trainers and student-athletes at Troy University have been doing there part to help out.
Every year, in the month of November, all athletic trainers and student-athletes donate canned goods to the Pike County Human Resources Office, who then distributes them to the families in Pike County that really need them.
Dr. John Anderson of the Troy Athletic Training Program, and the director of this project says, "The student-athletes and trainers have always come through like gangbusters. This project is a great way for our students to give back to Pike County."
Last year, nearly 3,900 lbs. where collected, and "Doc" Anderson hopes to collect more than that this year.
Director of Student-Athlete Services, Matt Mayotte, says "This drive is great for two reasons. First, it helps the surrounding community, and second, it help the student-athletes with there own since of gratitude."
"Often times when we dwell on our own problems, the best thing to do is to help someone else," said Mayotte.
The official amount of food that was collected will not be known until a later date.
