BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The Troy Trojans took the floor against Western Kentucky University at E.A. Diddle Arena in front of the third-largest crowd to watch a Trojan volleyball match this season. Unfortunately for Troy, the majority of the crowd was in favor of the homestanding Lady Toppers, with WKU coming away with a 3-0 (13-25, 9-25, 20-25) victory that ended the season for the Trojans.
The announced crowd of 650 was the third-largest of the season to watch Troy, and the largest on the road. The only two matches that drew bigger crowds were at Trojan Arena when the Trojans hosted Auburn and Jacksonville State on back-to-back home dates.
After dropping the first two sets, Troy fought to stay in the match in the third and final set. After trailing 8-2 in the final set, the Trojans fought back to close the gao to 21-17. From that point, Troy got a kill from Meghan Gilroy off an assist from Megan Henderson to trim the deficit to 21-18; before a WKU kill from Julia Noe extended the lead back to four at 22-18. Troy trimmed the deficit to 22-19 when an attack error by Brittany Bowen off the serve of Aubre Smith went wide, and the Trojans trimmed the deficit to two at 22-20 when Henderson registered a kill off an assist from Laura Mackley. Unfortunately for Troy, WKU scored the final three points of the set to end the match.
Megan Argabright led WKU (23-9, 12-5 Sun Belt) with 16 kills and recorded an attack percentage of .450, while Bowen added 12 kills while hitting .688.
Gilroy led Troy (13-19, 4-13 Sun Belt) with seven kills while hitting .316. Henderson recorded 15 assists, while Mackley recorded nine digs and Emily Strader eight.
The loss to the Lady Toppers brought the careers of Smith, Molly Eubank, Meghan Washlow, Jennifer White and Jean McCarthy to an end as the Trojans finish two spots out of qualifying for the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
