Trojans Fall To Middle Tennessee

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Troy Trojans fell to Middle Tennessee State University, 3-0 (12-25, 20-25, 17-25)in Sun Belt Conference volleyball action Friday night.
Meghan Gilroy led Troy (13-18, 4-12 Sun Belt) with seven kills in 18 total attacks, while sophomore Megan Henderson added 18 assists and six digs. Emily Strader led the Trojans with seven digs. Ashley Asberry led Middle Tennessee with 15 kills and just one attack error. She also hit a match-high .667 attack percentage.
After dropping the first set 25-12, the Trojans were able to fight back in the second set. After falling behind by as many as five late in the set, the Trojans were able to fight to within a single point at 19-18. The Blue Raiders jumped to a 17-12 advantage, but Troy got a pair of service aces by Laura Mackley, a kill from Gilroy and a block by Aubre Smith to climb to within a single point late in the set. Unfortunately, Middle Tennessee was able to open the set up, going on a 6-2 run to close out the set.
The Trojans found themselves battling Middle Tennessee (23-5, 13-3 Sun Belt) point-for-point in the third set, tying the set at 6-all. Middle Tennessee was able to push the lead to as many as nine late in the set, until Jean McCarthy recorded a pair of kills for the final deficit.
Troy closes out the season against Western Kentucky University on Saturday night. Unable to qualify for postseason play, the Trojans will take the court at 6 pm at E.A. Diddle Arena.
