The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee held another meeting on Wednesday, November 12th.
The meeting was opened by President Ryan Schmeling as he presented the first speaker, Dr. Jon Anderson.
"Doc" Anderson spoke about the Pike County Food Drive. He spoke of the past success the athletic department has had in collecting canned goods for the poor of Pike County. He challenged the student-athletes to collect more than the 3,900 lbs. they collected last year.
The next guest speaker was Dr. Fred Green. Dr. Green is the Troy University Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR). He spoke about his duties as a FAR. Dr. Green is responsible for representing the student-athlete academically. He explained that he is most proud of the athletes, not when they succeed on the field, but when he sees them walk across the stage and receive their degree.
Next, two students from the Troy University Relay for Life discussed this years event. A tentative date of March 27th has been set.
The committee also had a discussion on depression and how it affects collegiate athletes. They discussed ways to help teammates cope through times of depression.
An update was given on the "Trojans for Baby Bella" project. About $300 were raised at the men's basketball game against West Alabama on November 10th. As of now, over $1,000 has been raised to help Bella in her battle with leukemia. For more information of the project, click the SAAC website link above.
