TROY, Ala. - The Troy Trojans volleyball program will look to rebound against South Alabama Monday night at Jaguar Gymnasium in Sun Belt Conference action. Both teams head into the match dropping their first four conference matches.
Although dropping their first four matches in the Sun Belt Conference this season, the Trojans are still in the race in East Division as every team in the division has at least one loss and the fourth-place team (Florida Atlantic) has two losses. Also, the top eight teams in the conference go to the postseason conference tournament, and the Trojans are currently tied for tenth place in the league with South Alabama and Louisiana-Monroe. A win against South Alabama would push the Trojans into a tie for eighth heading into the rest of the week.
Troy (9-10, 0-4 Sun Belt) will look to junior Meghan Gilroy to provide the spark offensively. The junior recorded 27 total kills in the two matches against UALR and Arkansas State this week, both five-set losses. Gilroy has recorded double-digit kills in all but three matches this season, and when she records double-digit kills, the Trojans are 9-7. When she doesn't, they have recorded an 0-3 record.
The Trojans will also look to senior Aubre Smith to get back on track and senior Jean McCarthy, who recorded eight kills in her first significant playing time of the season against Arkansas State Saturday night. Senior Meghan Washlow added to her total of service aces, and continues to lead the conference in that category with 31.
After dropping their first two conference matches by a combined score of 6-1 to Florida Atlantic and Florida International, the Trojans came back and forced two five-set matches against two of the top teams from the West Division on Friday night and Saturday afternoon - with a chance to win both.
Troy will travel to Mobile to face South Alabama (6-6, 0-4 Sun Belt), in the first of four consecutive matches on the road this week during the school's Fall Break. The Trojans will also travel to Louisiana-Monroe, Louisiana-Lafayette and New Orleans.
The match is schedule to start 7 pm at Jaguar Gymnasium on the campus of South Alabama Monday night.
