Trojans Fall To Arkansas State In Five

TROY, Ala. - The Troy Trojans battled a team from the state of Arkansas into a fifth set. However, for the second consecutive day the Trojans were unable to come away with the victory, falling to Arkansas State University 3-2 at Trojan Arena in Sun Belt Conference play Saturday afternoon.
Less than 24 hours after battling UALR into fifth sets, the Trojans fell to Arkansas State in five after leading 2-1 heading into the fourth set. The Red Wolves won the fourth and fifth sets en route to 25-14, 16-25, 20-25, 25-20, 15-11.
Meghan Gilroy led Troy with 13 total kills, as she was the only Trojan in double figures in the match. Brittany McClelland came off the bench to register nine kills, while Aubre Smith and Jean McCarthy added eight kills each. Sophomore Megan Henderson recorded 43 assists and 11 digs, while Meghan Washlow added 12 and Emily Strader 10 in the loss.
Cayla Fielder led Arkansas State with 13 total kills, while hitting .231 on the day. Kristen Catalane came off the bench for the Red Wolves to register 12 total kills and hit .364 for the afternoon. Laura Bennett added 50 assisst, while Heather Bowman and Erin Neeley added 16 digs each.
The Trojans, after falling in the first set, came back to win the second and third sets to take a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth set. In the third set, Troy found themselves down 5-0 before they able to string points together and take a 9-8 lead. The two teams traded points after that until Troy built a 19-14 advantage on a block by Gilroy. The lead stayed that way with Troy getting a set point on an attack error from Mandy DeWalt. Troy won the third set on another attack error by Arkansas State to take the 2-1 lead overall in the match.
The Trojans had their chances in the fourth set when they tied the score at 12-all, but were unable to close the gap closer than two when Arkansas State put together 9-5 run to pull ahead 21-17.
Troy (9-10, 0-4 Sun Belt) returns to action Monday night against the University of South Alabama on the road. It is the first of four consecutive matches on the road for the Trojans, who have played 15 of their first 19 on the road this season.
