BAY ST. LOUIS, Miss. ? The Troy University women's golf team struggled to an eighth place finish at the LDR Investments Intercollegiate, hosted by Nicholls State University at The Bridges at Hollywood Casino Resort.
The Trojans shot an opening round score of 322, falling 24 shots off the pace set by Sam Houston State and 34 shots over par. The team improved on Tuesday, posting a second round score of 319 to finish 13 shots behind the host team for seventh place, 44 shots behind McNeese State.
MSU shot a second round score of 295 and finished at 21-over par 597 for the tournament. Sam Houston State finished second, 10 shots back of McNeese State.
“Putting killed us in this tournament,” coach Matt Terry said. “If we eliminate three putts, we finish second. It was as simple as that. In the last tournament, we putted very well and played well. When you don't putt, you don't score, it's as simple as that.”
The Trojans finished the tournament fourth in par three scoring at 10 over par.
“I am really excited about the development of freshmen Nikki Crowley and Haley Lawrence,” Terry said. “For them to go out and be the top two scorers is very exciting for the future of this program.”
Crowley, a native of Phenix City, finished tied for 17th in the tournament with a score of 156, 14 over par. Lawrence, a native of Prattville, finished tied for 25th, three shots behind Crowley.
Junior Kaley Branton (Cartersville, Ga.) finished 36th overall with a score of 162, sophomore Liz Balkcom (Juliette, Ga.) finished tied for 39th with a score of 164 and sophomore Annelies Bunik-Anderson finished 59th with a score of 181.
The Trojans will return to action on Monday and Tuesday next week at the Troy University Women's Invitational, which will be played at Arrowhead Country Club in Montgomery. The tournament will feature 14 collegiate teams and 77 players.
The teams will play a practice round on Sunday starting between 9 a.m. and noon with tournament play scheduled to start on Monday at 8:30 a.m.
