TROY, Ala. - The Troy Trojans found themselves in a tough spot Saturday afternoon at Trojan Arena against the Sun Belt Conference's best team. After falling the first set, Troy was unable to rebound and fell to FIU 3-0 in Sun Belt Conference action.
Megan Henderson registered a double-double with 18 assists and 12 digs, as the Trojans fell 25-11, 25-21, 25-12 Saturday afternoon. The match featured seven lead changes.
Through the first two sets, the Trojans held All-American, and Sun Belt Conference Preseason Player of the Year, Yarimar Rosa to just eight kills and an attack percentage of .087. However, they were unable to keep her down in the third set as the junior was able to register seven kills and hit .500 to help the Golden Panthers seal the match.
"They are the best team in the conference for a reason," Troy coach Sonny Kirkpatrick said. "We had their best player to just .087 hitting percentage, but she was able to get seven kills in the final set. You are not going to win a lot of matches if that happens. We just have to get ready as a team because now we travel to the second best team in the league, Denver, next week."
Troy fell behind early, falling in the first set, but battled back in the second set to take a lead late in the set at 15-14. After an attack error by FIU's Sabrina Gonzalez gave Troy a 16-14 lead, FIU trimmed the lead to 16-15. A service error from FIU's Angelina Colon gave Troy a 17-15 lead, FIU trimmed the lead to 17-16 before Laura Mackley registered a kill for an 18-16 Trojans lead. FIU scored the next two points to tie the set at 18-all, before Troy was able to get a kill from senior Aubre Smith for a 19-18 lead. From there, FIU scored seven of the next nine points to seal the victory.
Troy returns to action against Denver on the road next Friday, and then at North Texas on Sunday afternoon.
