Trojans Fall In Final Louisiana Road Match

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Troy Trojans fell to the University of New Orleans 3-0 in their final road match of a three-match Louisiana road trip in four days.
Junior Meghan Gilroy led the Trojans with 12 kills, while hitting a season-high .500 in the 17-25, 22-25, 24-26 loss to New Orleans Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Megan Henderson posted just 21 assists in the match, in which the Trojans hit .191 as a team and connected on 30 kills in the three sets.
After falling by eight in the first set, the Trojans were able to battle back in the second set and tie the match at 17-all. A kill by freshman Laura Mackley an 18-17 lead and the lead was pushed to 19-17 on another Mackley kill off the assist of Henderson. After that point, New Orleans reeled off four consecutive points to take a 21-19 lead over Troy before freshman Brittany McClelland trimmed the lead to 21-20. New Orleans was able to get a set point at 24-20, but Troy scored back-to-back points on a block from McClelland and junior Lauren Barney-Baker and an attack error. The Privateers were able to capture the set on a kill from Kaley Hubbard.
The Trojans came out of the locker room needing a victory in the third set to extend the match and were able to take an early 12-9 advantage in that set on a kill from Gilroy. New Orleans came back and tied the match at 16-all before an attack error gave Troy a 17-16 advantage. The teams traded points until New Orleans went up 20-17 and earned a match point at 24-23. Mackley thwarted that match point with a kill off the assist of Henderson. Unfortunately for Troy, New Orleans was able to score the final two points of the set to claim the match in three sets.
Troy (11-12, 2-6 Sun Belt) returns to action Friday night hosting Florida Atlantic University at Trojan Arena. The match begins at 7 pm and admission is free to all volleyball matches.
