Trojans Split Two Matches On Saturday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Troy volleyball team split a pair of matches on the opening day of the 2007 Barber's Bulldog Classic at Samford on Saturday. The Trojans fell to the host Bulldogs, 3-0 (30-27, 30-24, 30-26) before downing Coastal Carolina, 3-0 (30-28, 30-28, 30-23).
The Trojans (3-3) will wrap up play in the tournament on Sunday at noon with a match against McNeese State at noon.
In its first game against Samford, the Trojans fell behind quickly in the first game, but fought back to close within three. The Bulldogs increased their lead to six before holding on to win 30-27.
The two teams traded the lead a couple time during the second game, but the Bulldogs took the lead for good after a tie at 18. Samford went on a 12-6 run to take the game 30-24.
In the third game, Samford lead by as many as eight points before the Trojans battled back to get within one. That was, however, as close as Troy would get as Samford clenched the match with a 30-26 win.
Jean McCarthy led the Trojans against Samford with 12 kills while Megan Henderson and Emily Strader had 12 digs each.
Troy came back in the afternoon and swept three games from Coastal Carolina to even its record in the tournament.
In the opening game, Troy trailed by as many as seven points (23-16) late in the game before finishing with a 14-5 flourish to take the game 30-28. McCarthy keyed a final five-point rally at the end of the match, with an ace that was surrounded by two Aubre Smith kills and two CCU attack errors.
In the second game the Trojans took control early, leading by as many as nine points (17-8) before holding off the Chanticleers for a 30-28 victory. Kerry Heinz closed out the win with her third kill of the game for Troy.
In the third game, the Trojans pushed out to a seven-point lead (12-5) and maintained that advantage throughout the game, closing with a kill by Meghan Gillroy to win 30-23.
The Trojans finished the match with 46 kills, led by McCarthy with 14 and Smith with 11, to go with 12 service aces and 48 digs. Henderson had 40 set assists to go with 10 digs, both team highs for the match.
