TROY, Ala. ? Troy University head football coach Larry Blakeney announced today the addition of John Schlarman to the Trojans' coaching staff.
Schlarman, 32, comes to Troy from Newport High school in Newport, Ky., where he served as head coach over the last two seasons, compiling a 19-6 record. He will serve as the Trojans' offensive line coach, replacing Matt Moore who left Troy for a similar position at Texas Tech.
"We are excited that John is joining our staff," Blakeney said. "Losing Matt at this time of the year was a tough blow, but being able to replace him with a coach like John, who has extensive experience coaching linemen in offenses like ours, should allow for an easy transition."
In addition to his high school coaching career, which includes two seasons as head coach at Campbell County High in Alexandria, Ky., and two years as an assistant coach at Bourbon County High in Paris, Ky., Schlarman has four years of collegiate coaching experience.
After an All-SEC playing career at the University of Kentucky, where he was a three-time Academic Honor Roll selection as well as a first team All-SEC pick in 1997, Schlarman remained at Kentucky, serving as an offensive line graduate assistant while completing a Master of Science degree in Kinesiology and Health Promotion.
During his time as a graduate assistant with the Wildcats, in addition to assisting with the offensive line, he coached tight ends and served as the walk-on program coordinator. In 2003 he served as an assistant in the strength and conditioning program as well as assistant in football operations at Baylor.
"I am very excited to be able to coach at Troy University with Coach Blakeney," Schlarman said. "I am very familiar with the system that Coach Tony Franklin has developed and I am looking forward to helping the team, and especially the offensive line, reach its potential on and off the field."
Schlarman and his wife, Lee Anne, a native of Lexington, Ky., have one son, Joseph Douglas, born on March 2, 2006.
The defending Sun Belt Conference champion Trojans will open the 2007 season on September 1 at Arkansas.
