MOBILE, Ala.- For the second straight outing, South Alabama pitcher Kevin Nabors threw a solid game against the Trojans keeping them off balance as Troy fell in day three of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament by a score of 4-1.
Their pitcher was really good today,? assistant coach Mark Smartt said. I feel for our team and I know they hurt after losing today but hopefully we can regroup and I hope we get a chance to continue after this tournament.?
South Alabama (31-25) put two runs on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Ryne Jernigan reached base on a double followed by Bunky Kateon reaching base on a wild pitch after he struck out. Both runners came around to score on a two-RBI double from Clint Toomey giving the Jaguars the 2-0 early lead.
USA added two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Jaguars got three hits and an error as USA increased their lead to 4-0.
Troy (34-25) finally got on the board in the top of the seventh inning when sophomore Beau Brooks led off the inning with a walk followed by freshman Shohei Fujita getting hit by a pitch. Brooks scored on an RBI single by senior Edgar Ramirez closing the gap to 4-1.
We met every challenge this season,? Smartt said. As the league champ, we got everybody's best shot and our kids battled and as a staff we are very proud of them.?
Junior Ryan Ellison (3-4) took the loss on the hill as he tossed five innings allowing three runs on six Jaguar hits. He walked three batters and struck out six. Senior Jonathan Sabat three the final three innings and allowed one run on three hits. Sabat also struck out six batters.
Troy was led at the plate by Ramirez with two hits and the lone RBI.
The Trojans will await the NCAA Baseball Selection Show Monday afternoon to find out if their season will continue past the conference tournament.
