Trojans Take Series from Louisiana-Monroe

TROY, Ala.- Three seniors paced the attack for the Trojans in a 9-4 win over Louisiana-Monroe Sunday afternoon at Riddle-Pace Field. Edgar Ramirez, Clint Robinson and Kevin Weidlich each had two hits and two RBI to lead the team to a series win over the Warhawks.
Troy (28-17, 13-8) put up three runs in the first inning when senior Ian Craze led off with a single up the middle followed by walks to Robinson and senior Josh Dew. Craze and Robinson scored on a double by Weidlich off the wall in center field with Dew scoring on a walk to sophomore Beau Brooks for the early 3-0 lead.
Robinson belted a ball over the wall in center field for his thirteenth home run of the season. Ramirez scored on the play as he reached on an error by Travis Drader at third, for a 5-0 lead.
"I was glad to see us get the win today and take the series," head coach Bobby Pierce said. "These wins put us in a good situation to make a run down the stretch."
Louisiana-Monroe (26-20, 14-9) got on the board in the third inning when Andy Jones reached base on a fielders choice followed by a single from designated hitter Matt Laird. Jones scored on a sacrifice fly from Kyle Suire with Laird scoring on a single by Ben Soiginer closing to gap to 5-2.
Sophomore Trevor Tyre double to left center to lead off the third inning and scored on a single from junior Bryan Miller. Ramirez hit a sacrifice fly to center field scoring Miller for the 7-2 lead.
Suire hit his third home run of the weekend in the fifth inning with Jones adding his second in the top of the seventh.
Brooks hit his fourth bomb of the season in the seventh inning with Ramirez adding his eleventh in the bottom of the eighth for the 9-4 lead.
Junior Ryan Ellison (3-1) got the start on the mound for the Trojans. He worked six and a third innings allowing four runs on nine ULM hits. Ellison also struck out eight batters while walking four. Freshman Tim Wheeler came on to close out the sixth inning striking out one batter. Dew tossed the final two innings striking out two hitters to seal the win.
Bucky Chandler (2-3) was the losing pitcher for ULM as he allowed seven runs on six hits over two innings of work. The Warhawks used five pitchers on the day.
The Trojans will return to action Tuesday afternoon as they play host to in-state foe, Samford. The Bulldogs beat Troy twice last season in Birmingham. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
