Troy Takes First Game From FAU

BOCA RATON, Fla.- The Trojans put up four runs in the third inning and never looked back as they beat one of the top hitting teams in the country in Florida Atlantic, 12-6.
Troy (11-8, 2-2) started the scoring in the third inning when sophomore Brett Pierce led off with a walk followed by an error on a hit by Ian Craze. Both runners scored on a two RBI single by senior Edgar Ramirez. Senior Kevin Weidlich was then hit by a pitch and scored on a two RBI double by senior Ben Woods giving the Trojans an early 4-0 lead..
FAU (17-5, 2-2) got on the board in the fourth when Daniel bomback led off with a bunt single followed by a Robbie Widlansky. Tyler Stevens singled to right scoring two runs cutting the score to 4-2.
The Trojans answered right back in the top of the fifth as Weidlich doubled to left center. Senior Josh Dew walked and was followed by a Clint Robinson home run. Robinson hit a 2-1 fastball deep into the woods behind the wall in right center extending the leadto 7-2.
In the bottom of the fifth, FAU plated four runs on back-to-back home runs by Widlansky and Mike McKenna closing the gap to 7-6.
Freshman Matt Tanzi came in to pinch hit and hit a 0-2 pitch over the wall in left field for his second home run of the season.
Troy added some insurance runs in the eighth inning as Robinson doubled down the left field line followed by a walk by Woods. Brett Henry singled up the middle scoring Robinson. Bryan Miller, who pinch ran for Woods, scored on a wild pitch.
Senior Clegg Snipes was the starting pitcher for Troy. Snipes hurled 4.1 innings, allowing six runs on eight hits while striking out five.
Dew came on in the seventh after junior Rob Brown (3-1) got into trouble with two straight walks. Brown pitched 1.2 innings and walked three batters but got the win. Dew pitched the final three innings giving up only one hit and striking out four FAU batters.
Troy was led at the plate by Henry who was 3-for-4. Weidlich was 3-for-5 with a double while Woods was 2-for-4 also with a double.
Troy will be back in action Saturday as the face FAU in the second game of the series. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. CT
