TROY, Ala. - Troy University head football coach Larry Blakeney announced today the addition of Chad Scott to his coaching staff. Scott replaces James Joseph, who left Troy to accept a position at the University of Memphis.
"Chad is the kind of person that we want to have here," Blakeney said. "He sets a great example for our players, having been a collegiate and professional player himself very recently. He has played and coached in this offensive system and was in camp with us last summer. He is a guy that our coaches, especially Coach Franklin, felt good about bringing onto our staff."
Scott, 26, is a native of Plant City, Florida, and played at the University of Kentucky for two seasons while current Troy offensive coordinator Tony Franklin served in the same capacity for the Wildcats. After a coaching change at UK, he transferred to North Carolina, where he played his final two years.
"Coach Franklin recruited me out of high school and then I played for him for two years," Scott said. "He was always very straight forward, never lied to me. He was always tough on me, demanded a lot from me, and I developed a lot of respect for him over those years. Even after I wasn't playing for him he kept in contact with me and was always someone I could go to if I needed any guidance."
While playing at Kentucky, Scott led the Wildcats in rushing as a freshman, earning SEC All-Freshman team honors as well as third team freshman All-America. Injuries shortened his sophomore season before he transferred to UNC.
As a senior at UNC he led the Tar Heels in rushing with 796 yards and eight touchdowns while splitting time with two other backs. He was named All-ACC in 2004 and received his degree in sociology in 2005.
After his collegiate career he spent time with the Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants in the NFL before returning to UNC as a graduate assistant helping with scouting and video breakdown.
"This is my first full time coaching job, so it is a great opportunity for me to have at such a young age," Scott said. "I was able to come here last year and work the summer camps, and that gave me an opportunity to bond with the staff here. We have a great group of guys and that gave me an opportunity to get to know them a little bit. Coach Blakeney is a great guy and I appreciate him giving me this opportunity to come here and be a part of his staff."
Scott said he sees his age as an advantage, but that he will be a demanding coach.
"I am very energetic and very passionate about the game," Scott said. "I demand that my guys play to the best of their ability every day. Being so young, I can relate very well with the guys. I understand some of the things they are going through with school and football. I spent some time in the NFL, so I know a little about what it takes to get there."
Scott was married to the former Shambrica Jones of Yazoo City, Miss., last August.
