Troy-FAU To Settle Sun Belt Title
12/1/2007 6:00:00 AM | Football
It all comes down to one game for all the marbles.
On a day when several other conferences will hold championship games, the Sun Belt Conference will also get in on the action.
When the Trojans host Florida Atlantic this afternoon at 1 p.m. at Movie Gallery Veterans Stadium, Troy (8-3, 6-0) will be playing for the outright Sun Belt Conference title and a berth in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl.
The stakes are equally high for FAU (6-5, 5-1) because the Owls, with a win over Troy, would earn a share of the Sun Belt crown and would take the spot in New Orleans opposite Memphis on Friday, December 21.
The stakes are as high as they can possibly be. The winner will enjoy the fruits of victory while the loser will have to spend the next nine months thinking about what might have been.
For the Trojans, the game takes on extra meaning for 18 seniors who will be taking to the field at Movie Gallery Stadium for the final time. The home field has been especially good to this group over the last four years, with a 16-3 record that includes a pair of victories over FAU.
That group of seniors ? which includes offensive starters Omar Haugabook, Gary Banks, Josh Allen and Kenny Cattouse, as well as defensive starters Chris Bradwell, Shawn Todd, Marcus Pittman, Marcus Richardson, Leodis McKelvin and Elbert Mack ? has a chance to leave a lasting mark on the Troy program.
They have already been a part of the first bowl game in school history, the first bowl victory in school history, the first win over a top 25 team and the first Division I-A conference title, but earning a win over FAU would give the team a chance to post a 10-win season for the first time since the move to I-A.
The game features the two top passing offenses in the Sun Belt, the two top quarterbacks in the league and the two top pass interceptors in the nation. Troy's Mack leads the country with eight picks this year, one in front of FAU freshman Tavious Polo.
With no other games in the state, in fact no games of real interest state-wide, there will be no excuses for a less that full house at Movie Gallery Veterans Stadium. The weather is forecast to be perfect, with temperatures in the upper 60s at kickoff.
Fans are encouraged to wear cardinal and come ready to cheer on the Trojans to a second straight Sun Belt crown.
