Trojans Down Huntingdon 34-7 in JV Football

TROY, Ala. - Troy University sophomore Shelby Davis did all he could to make a strong impression on the Trojans' football coaching staff Sunday afternoon, piling up 194 yards receiving and 52 more yards on the ground as Troy defeated Huntingdon College 34-7 in a junior varsity game at Movie Gallery Veterans Stadium.
Davis, a receiver from Clanton, Ala., had a game-high 13 receptions, but it wasn't until the fourth quarter, when he moved to quarterback, that he was able to get into the end zone, scoring on a six-yard run to cap the victory for Troy.
The Trojans piled up 559 yards of total offense in the game, 292 through the air and 267 on the ground. Freshmen quarterbacks Tanner Jones (Wakulla, Fla.) and Jamie Hampton (Cedar Bluff, Ala.) rotated at quarterback throughout the game. Hampton completed 16-of-19 pass attempts for 220 yards while Jones hit on eight-of-12 for 72 yards.
The quarterback duo was also the Trojans' leading rushers in the game, with Hampton totalling 57 yards on six carries and Jones gaining 52 yards and a score on four carries. Jones scored the first points of the game on a 56-yard run and Hampton followed suit on the next Troy possession, scoring from 31 yards out.
Sophomore Josh Brownell (Geneva, Ala.) added the third Troy touchdown on a two-yard run before Davis capped the scoring. Sophomore Sam Glusman (Mobile, Ala.) connected on all four of his PAT kicks and also hit field goals from 45 and 22 yards.
Running back Marlo Smith was the standout performer for Huntingdon, rushing for 116 yards on 17 carries. Drew Harrell, one of three quarterbacks for the Hawks, completed nine-of-13 passes for 87 yards, including a 12-yard pass to Jakob Dwyer in the third quarter for Huntingdon's only points.
With the win, the Troy JV team improved to 1-1 on the year while dropping the Huntingdon JV to 3-1.
