TROY, Ala. - Denver used a double-double by Holly Benson to rally from an early deficit and defeat the Troy Trojans 3-1 in Sun Belt Conference volleyball action here Saturday evening.
Troy (14-14, 5-7 SBC) took the first game of the match, 30-28, after falling behind by as many as eight points during the game. Denver (15-9, 9-2 SBC) took an early 18-10 advantage before the Trojans fought back to eventually tie the match at 22-22 after a service ace from Jean McCarthy. Following the ace, the Trojans took a 23-22 lead after an attack error by Denver's Kim Muller, before Denver tied the match back up at 23-23. The two teams would share the lead two more times during the match before the Trojans took a 29-27 lead following a kill by Loni Beth Jones. The Trojans dropped a point, before Jones recorded a service ace to end the first game.
Denver won the second game 30-17, before the two teams battled to a 31-29 third game. After Troy took a lead by as many as six points in the match, they fought off a game point at 29-28 when Alyssa Hampton hit the ball into the net on an attack to tie the game at 29-29. Denver hit the next two points to win the game before taking the final game of the match 30-20.
Troy battled throughout the night after a battle with North Texas less than 24 hours prior to tonight's match.
"It was tough coming back from last night," Trojans head coach Sonny Kirkpatrick said. "Even though it was tough, there are still no excuses. We just did not bring our A-game to the match. I am not taking anything away from Denver, they are a great team and amazing on defense, we just played negative throughout the match."
Meghan Gilroy led the Trojans with 18 kills, while Aubre Smith added 10. Meanwhile, Megan Henderson and Meghan Washlow led Troy with 19 digs.
Benson led Denver with 20 kills and 24 digs.
Troy returns to action next weekend on the road against South Alabama on October 27.
