BATON ROUGE, La. -- Monique Johnson broke a pair of school record this weekend to lead Troy at the prestigious Bayou Bengal Invitational Indoor Track and Field Meet, hosted by Louisiana State. The senior scored 3,345 points in the pentathalon Thursday to capture third place in the event.
Johnson narrowly edged teammate Juzill Rudolph, who had 3,392 points, in the grueling one-day, five-event test. Rudolph was fourth, behind LSU's Shaunette Davidson, Miami's Amy Seward and Johnson. Freshman Megan Young improved her pentathlon total by over 250 points, finishing eighth with 2,903 points.
Johnson broke the school record in the 60-meter hurdles with a blistering time of 8.51, finishing third overall behind a pair of All-Americans from LSU. In the same race, freshman LaToya Ragland (9.07) and Rudolph (9.13) finished sixth and seventh, respectively.
Johnson added to her laurels as she finished fourth in the open 200-meter race with a time of 24.35. The Distance Medley Relay team of Martyna Pietryka, Brittney McGhee, Laide Onikoyi, and Jenean Corcoran missed breaking the school record by one-tenth of a second. Pietryka turned in the best performance of the group, running her opening leg of 1200 meters in 3:46.6.
Agata Cichoszewska started out her season with a leap of 39-feet, 5-inches in the triple jump, good for third place. Sprinter Tawanna Meadows sped through a 7.60 in the 60 meters, just .06 off her lifetime best to earn eighth place in the event, while the 4 x 400 team of Jocelyn Williams, Pietryka, Rudolph, and Onikoyi had a strong performance in finishing third with a time of 4:01.96.
