Trojans Defeat Warhawks, Fall to Tigers

STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Troy University volleyball team split on the first day of the Mississippi State Microtel Classic winning its first match with Louisiana-Monroe and dropping its second match to Grambling State.
Troy (3-6) battled in the match with the Lady Tigers (2-4) but could never continue to hold the momentum falling in five games by scores of 34-32, 28-30, 28-30, 30-26 and 12-15.
Freshman Meghan Gilroy led the team in kills with 19 for a hitting percentage of .452. Also notching double figure kills were sophomore Aubre Smith with 15 and freshmen Liz Leeds with 13 and Lauren Barney with 11.
Sophomore Megan Washlow notched 53 assists and 12 digs for the Trojans. Sophomore Jean McCarthy recorded 14 digs to help the Trojans offensively.
Leading the Lady Tigers to the win was Lacey Cormier with 28 kills and only three errors for a hitting percentage of .581.
Grambling State went on a five-point run to start the first game with the Trojans and lead 6-2. Troy tied the game at seven but then the Lady Tigers went on another run to go up by six, 13-7. Troy took its first lead of the game late, 30-29, and after battling back and forth clinched the win, 34-32.
Troy and Grambling State traded points to begin game two with the Lady Tigers pulling away by three, 14-11. Troy regained the momentum on an ace by sophomore Jean McCarthy but still trailing 21-22 fought to take the lead, 23-22. The Trojans and the Lady Tigers once again traded points with Grambling State ending up on top defeating Troy, 30-28.
Troy could not get anything started in game three beginning the game by losing two points, scoring one and then losing the next five, 1-7, before scoring again. The Trojans then tied the score at nine and continued to trade points with the Lady Tigers. After taking the lead, 26-19 Troy could not hold on allowing Grambling State to come back, tie the score at 27 and win 30-29.
Game four started the same as the other three as Troy fell behind early and battled to keep the score close. Troy tied the score at eight and continued to trade points, taking the lead, 13-10. Troy fell behind 25-19 then went on a nine-point run led by Washlow's serve to take the lead 28-25. Troy held on for the win, 30-26.
Troy started game five by dropping the first three points and stayed behind by two at the eight point break, 8-6. Trading points back and fourth Troy tied the game at 11 but was unable to continue the momentum and dropped the game, 15-12.
In Troy's first match of the Mississippi State Microtel Classic, Smith recorded nine kills to lead the Trojans to victory over Louisiana-Monroe by scores of 30-27, 31-29 and 30-25. Smith was nine-for-17 with only one error giving her a .471 attack percentage for the match.
Washlow had 21 assists and one ace for the match.
In game one, the Trojans traded points with the Warhawks before getting an early 7-4 lead. Louisiana-Monroe tied the game at 14 but Troy continued to battle and pulled away to a 19-15 lead. With the score 29-23, the Warhawks went on a four-point run before Troy scored the final point to win 30-27.
Troy started game two off slowing falling 0-4 before scoring its first point. After three ties and trialing by one point for most of the game the Trojans finally gained the momentum and took its first lead of the game, 18-15. After gaining the lead, Troy continued to fight clinching the win by a final score of 31-29.
The Trojans and the Warhawks traded points with neither ever taking a big lead in game three until Troy notched a nine point lead with the score at 19-10. ULM continued to give Troy a fight whittling the lead to three, 22-19. With Troy leading 28-21, ULM went on a four-point run before Troy scored the final point to win the match, 30-25.
Troy will be back in action on Saturday when it will face Jackson State at 2 p.m. Troy will then have a small break before playing Mississippi State at 7 p.m.
