TROY, Ala. -- After posting a win over UT-Martin to begin the Holiday inn Express Labor Day Classic the Trojans were unable to capitalize on the momentum as they fell to Memphis by scores of 30-18, 30-27, 30-11.
Sophomore Meghan Washlow and freshman Meghan Gilroy were lone leaders for Troy (2-4) against the Tigers. Washlow recorded 26 assists, three kills and six digs. Gilroy had seven kills, 13 total attacks and two digs.
As a team, Troy had an attack percentage of .126, 37 digs and 30 kills.
I'm disappointed in the way the tournament finished because I thought we did some good things. We kind of lost a little bit of focus when things got a little tough there in game three. All in all Memphis is a pretty good team and for us to compete like we did in game one and two, I think shows us we are headed in the right direction,” head coach Sonny Kirkpatrick said.
Memphis recorded an attack percentage of .416, 51 kills and 42 digs. Shelby Burton led the team in kills with 17 and also had four services.
Troy held the game to one point until it was tied at 14 then the Tigers pulled away for the 30-18 win.
The Tigers controlled game two jumping to an early lead. The Trojans recovered and closed the gap to 18-14 but could never overcome the deficit.
Troy never got anything going in game to and the Tigers ran away with a 30-11 win.
Three Trojans topped double figures in kills as Troy posted a thrilling 30-24, 24-30, 24-30, 33-31, 15-11 victory over UT-Martin Satuday morning at the Holiday Inn Express Labor Day Classic.
Aubre Smith tallied 15 kills and a .303 hitting percentage, while Jean McCarthy and Meghan Gilroy added 12 kills each. Sarah Jett led the Skyhawks (2-3) with a dozen kills.
This was an exciting win for our program. We had to overcome quite a bit of adversity to win this match and it shows the direction this program is going. I am extremely proud of our team and hope that we can continue playing at the level we have the last two matches,” Kirkpatrick said.
After Troy won the opening game 30-24, UT-Martin answered with identical scores in the next two. The Trojans led 14-13 before going on a 5-0 run to make the score 19-13. The score was 25-20 when the SkyHawks answered with five straight of their own to even the game at 25. The teams traded the next six points before Troy tallied two in a row for a 29-27 lead.
UT-Martin saved the game with back-to-back points to retie the score at 29. After swapping points twice more, Troy broke a 31-31 tie with a kill by Liz Leeds and an ace by Carla Rasuck.
In the deciding fifth game, the teams were even after 20 points, leaving the score tied at 10. McCarthy and Smith tallied back-back kills for a little breathing room. After a Skyhawk point, McCarthy had another kill before back-to-back attack errors to seal the match.
