Trojans Conclude First Two-A-Day Practice
TROY, Ala. - The Troy Trojans football team completed its first two-a-day practice on Wednesday with a session in shorts in the morning followed by a full pad practice in the evening.
The Trojans first suited up at 6 a.m. for a one-hour and forty-five minute practice before taking the heat of the day off. The team went back out again for its normal 6 p.m. session to close the day.
The evening session was highlighted by intense inside work between the offensive and defensive lines that saw the tension spread to the coaching staff, as coaches on opposite sides of the ball squared off in verbal jabs.
Head Coach Larry Blakeney stressed that his team was still in the beginning stages.
"This was a basic practice," Blakeney said. "It was basic fundamentals for both sides of the ball. Especially on offense where we're still working on throwing and catching the ball."
Special teams also received some added attention as kicking was done early and towards the middle of practice.
Blakeney was impressed with the efforts of his young, freshman receivers.
"Cornelius [Williams], [Austin] Silvoy and [Zack] Marcum have all made an impact so far," Blakeney said.
Overall, the Trojans' coach said it was a productive day filled with what he called "real competitive drills," but he emphasized that the true test of his team's progress will come on Saturday when his squad will hold its first scrimmage of training camp.
"We're working toward Saturday when the referees will control the game," he said. "We'll be looking to see how the tempo looks."
Practice Notes: Quarterback Omar Haugabook returned to his role under center in the afternoon session after being limited over the last two practices to rest his throwing arm. In Blakeney's mind Haugabook "made us sharper offensively" … Josh Henderson, Will Chambliss and Fred Turner all were held out of drills during the evening practice with various minor ailments ... Junior linebacker Marcus Richardson was hampered toward the end of the evening practice with cramps, but he fought through the pain and participated in every drill.
