TROY, Ala. - The Troy University volleyball team will kickoff the 2006 season on Friday when it plays host to the Hampton Inn Spiketacular.
The two-day tournament will feature five teams including Florida A&M, North Florida, St. Mary's and Tulsa.
St. Mary's is currently receiving votes on the American Volleyball Coaches Association CSTV Top 25 poll.
I am excited about this tournament. It is a very good tournament with some very good schools from around the country,” head coach Sonny Kirkpatrick said. I always try to challenge my teams to play the most difficult schedule possible and I think we have achieved that this season.”
This will be the first of two tournaments the Trojans will host in 2006. The Trojan Labor Day Classic is the second tournament, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Sept. 1-2.
Troy will begin the Hampton Inn Spiketacular when it faces off against St. Mary's on Friday at 1 p.m.
Then, at 5 p.m., UNF plays Tulsa and, to wrap up the first day, St. Mary's will take on Florida A&M at 7 p.m.
On Saturday, UNF and St. Mary's will begin play at 9 a.m., with Florida A&M will face Tulsa at 11:30 a.m.
The Trojans will play back to back games on Saturday, taking on UNF at 2 p.m. and then Tulsa at 6 p.m.
With four returnees on the 2006 roster, but only two with significant playing time, the Trojans are hoping this tournament will give them an idea of their potential for the season.
I think this gives us the chance to see how good we can be. This is a very young team but they are talented and will help guide this program in the right direction,” Kirkpatrick said.
Troy will turn to sophomore Meghan Washlow to lead this young team, as she did as a freshman in 2005. During her freshman campaign Washlow notched 94 kills, 816 assists and 186 digs. She also blocked 22 shots and led the team in service aces with 38.
Admission to all home volleyball matches is free.
