Trojans Drop Two One-Run Games to FIU

MIAMI, Fla. - Trojan mistakes allowed the only run of game one and a three unearned runs in the nightcap as Florida International swept a Sun Belt Conference doubleheader Saturday 1-0 and 7-6.
Troy (28-37, 5-9 SBC) has now played 22 one-run games in 2006 and is now 6-16 when games are decided by a single run.
In the first game, FIU (27-26, 10-4 SBC) scored its one run on fielding error by sophomore Caurie Miller at second which brought in Desiree Fink from second.
Troy only notched two hits in the game as freshman Heidi Johnson went one for three and freshman Felicia Hammer went one for two.
Junior Laine Harcourt (15-19) took the loss in the circle as she went six innings allowed one unearned run and five hits.
In the second game, Troy started the scoring in the third when Miller scored on an error by FIU's second baseman on a hit by junior Brittany Krbec. Then sophomore Jessica Lyle single to left field scoring junior Angie Coteat from third and giving Troy a two-run lead.
FIU took the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Ashley Falk hit a three-run home run off of sophomore Angela Lopez to left centerfield, 3-2.
Troy then tied things up in the fifth on a ground rule double by Lyle which scored Coteat from third.
The Golden Panthers broke the tie in the fifth when Tracey Deleon scored on a passed ball. Then with two outs FIU's Tabitha Embry hit a two-run home run to extend the lead to three for FIU. Samantha Card doubled to score Kim Rodriguez from second, 7-3 Golden Panthers. FIU ended the inning with four runs on two hits and left two on base.
In the top of the seventh, junior Brooke Powell hit a three-run home run to close the gap for Troy and make it a one-run game, 7-6. Powell's ninth home run of the season was not enough however as the Trojans were unable to score any more runs to continue the game.
Lyle ended the game three for four with two RBI and scored one run.
Lopez took the loss as she fell to 11-13 after allowing seven runs, four earned and six hits in four point two innings.
FIU's softball program notched its 300th win on Saturday in the first game against the Trojans.
The losses, combined with a Western Kentucky sweep of North Texas, lock the Trojans into the No. 5 seed for the Sun Belt Conference Tournament next week. The Trojans will face No. 4 Middle Tennessee on Thursday.
