Volleyball Battles Past South Alabama, 3-1

TROY, Ala. - Freshman Meghan Gilroy led a trio of Trojans with double-figure kills to help Troy to a 28-30, 35-33, 33-31, 30-24 victory over South Alabama in Sun Belt Conference volleyball action Saturday at Trojan Arena.
Troy snapped a six-match losing skid, improving to 9-20 overall and 4-10 in league play. The Jaguars, losers of 15 straight, fell to 5-19, 0-13 SBC).
Gilroy had 18 kills, while sophomore Jean McCarthy and freshman Liz Leeds added 17 and 13, respectively.
Gilroy only had three errors and a hitting percentage of .385. Sophomore Meghan Washlow also contributed to the Trojans with her 50 assists and 18 digs.
South Alabama's Brittany Blackwelder led the Jags in kills with 16 and had three solo blocks.
Game one started with the two teams trading points before Troy took a small lead, 15-13. The Jags came back though tying the score at 27 before winning the first game.
Troy started game two in the hole, 17-14 before battling back to tie the game at 26. Neither team could score two in a row as they tied at 30 and continued to tie until Troy pulled it out to force a fourth game.
In game three, Troy started off slow but then took the lead, 16-14. Troy then extended its lead 23-14 but South Alabama battled back from the nine-point deficit to tie the game at 27. The Trojans held on though and with the game tied at 29 then 31 pulled out for the win.
Troy had the lead for most of game four, 14-7, and although South Alabama battled back, 18-16 it was not enough as Troy still led by many late, 28-22.
Troy will be back in action next Friday and Saturday when it will play host to Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee. Troy will first play Western Kentucky on Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. and then Middle Tennessee at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
