TROY, Ala. - Troy University Director of Athletics Steve Dennis announced today that Michael Izumi has been named interim head coach for the Trojans volleyball program.
"We wanted to move quickly with this search, but we also wanted to find someone we would feel comfortable turning this program over to on an interim basis," Dennis said. "Michael is no stranger to Troy University and will work closely with Coach Melanie Davis during this period of transition."
Izumi, a native of Fort Meade, Maryland, received his bachelor's degree in physical education from Troy University in 1996. He served as an assistant coach for the Trojans volleyball program from 1993-97.
Since leaving Troy he has served as Director and head coach of the Wavejammin' Junior Girls Volleyball Club in Panama City Beach, Florida. He has also served as head coach at Gulf Coast Community College in Panama City and as head coach of the Panama City Juniors Volleyball Club.
Izumi will work with Davis early on and will then take over the program himself. Following the completion of the 2005 season a national search will be conducted to find a permanent head coach for the Trojans volleyball program.
The Troy University volleyball team is 1-1 on the season and will host the Trojan Labor Day Classic this Friday and Saturday.
