Head Strength & Conditioning Coach
Richard Shaughnessy
Richard Shaughnessy is entering his ninth year as head strength and conditioning coach for Troy's 17 varsity programs.
A certified strength and conditioning specialist with the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA), Shaughnessy has been instrumental in developing stronger, quicker and more durable athletes at Troy. He is a member of the College Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCA) and is a club coach for the United States Weightlifting Federation. He has been involved with powerlifting for the past 24 years and has spent the last 15 working in human performance.
Shaughnessy also works with athletes after the conclusion of their college-playing careers, helping many move on to the professional level. In the past nine years, more than 40 of Shaughnessy's athletes have had the opportunity to compete following the conclusion of their careers at Troy.
In October of 2003, Shaughnessy was selected by the National Strength and Conditioning Association as one of 18 elite” strength coaches in the world. The inaugural program created by the NSCA honors the achievements and competencies of strength and conditioning specialists by assessing their practical and applied experience along with their interest and contributions to the profession of strength and conditioning.
A native of Dothan, Ala., Shaughnessy graduated from Auburn in 1989 with a bachelor's degree in health and human performance. He then received his master's in 1998 and his EDS in physical education in 2000, both from Troy.
Shaughnessy is planning to pursue his doctorate in sport and fitness management in the near future.
