TROY, Ala. - A few hours away from the ball park did not cool the hot hitting of the Troy Trojans baseball team.
Just hours after a late-night 9-5 victory over Samford on Friday, the Trojans piled up 12 hits on Saturday in an 11-3 victory over the Bulldogs. Troy has now beaten Samford nine consecutive times going back to last season.
Troy improved to 3-2 on the year with the victory while dropping the Bulldogs to 1-2.
The Trojans came out swinging against Bulldogs starter Stephen Artz (0-1), piling up six hits in the first two innings. The result was a pair of Troy runs in the second on back-to-back RBI singles by Chase Amis and Bryan Madril.
The Bulldogs bounced right back in the third, working a pair of walks from Troy starter Brent Adcock (1-1), followed by run-scoring singles from Matt Alling and Garrett Rice. Adcock got out of a potentially disastrous inning, however, by getting consecutive ground ball outs with the bases loaded.
The Trojans began to pull away in the fifth inning. Artz started the inning by walking Adam Godwin. The senior promptly stole second and third base to get into scoring position. Another walk put runners on the corner and a ground out by Clint Robinson drove in a run.
Following a strikeout, Jared Keel drew a two-out walk and then both he and Brian Bennett scored on a double to the left-center gap by Henry Gutierrez.
Adcock, who struggled in his first outing for the Trojans, pitched well against the Bulldogs. He worked six complete innings, allowing just two runs on three hits. He walked two and struck out four.
Reliever Ryan Ellison worked a quick seventh inning for Troy, but the freshman got into trouble in the eighth after allowing a solo homer by Rice by putting the potential tying runs on base with walks.
Junior Matt Dale earned his first save of the year by coming on in the eighth and closing the door. A six-run outburst by the Trojans in the home half of the inning put the game out of reach.
Godwin had three hits to lead Troy, but the Trojans got two hits each from Bennett, Gutierrez and Amis. Rice had two of the Bulldogs' four hits in the game.
The Trojans will go for the sweep on Sunday in a game that is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start. Freshman Steven Morelock is slated to take the mound for Troy while sophomore Joseph Edend is scheduled to pitch for Samford.
