The Black squad, led by solid defense and pitching, stormed from two games back to sweep the last three games to win the Fall Trojan Classic. With the win, the Troy University baseball team closes its fall practice schedule as the team prepares to open the 2005 season in February.
Senior Michael Davis threw five strong innings, giving up just one earned run to post the win in the finale. Senior centerfielder Adam Godwin drove in the tying run and scored the winning run on a throwing error while stealing third base. Godwin stole seven bases in the series from the leadoff spot in the lineup.
Junior tranfer outfielder Blake Green started the Black comeback with a two-out, three-run, walk-off home run to win game three of the series 4-2. The Cardinal team won games one and two with stellar pitching perfomances by junior transfer Tony Falls and senior Landon Brazell.
Both Falls and Brazell went five innings of shutout baseball while striking out 14. Falls drew the game five start and took the loss despite giving up only one earned run.
Freshman first baseman Chris Ivey led the Cardinal offense going 7-for-12 in the series. Junior third baseman Jared Keel knocked in five runs with three extra base hits. Freshman pitcher Steven Morelock threw five shutout innings in game three of the series.
Head Coach Bobby Pierce will lead his third Trojan team into the 2005 opener at McNeese State in Lake Charles, La., on February 11. The home opener will be February 18 when the Trojans host Samford University.
