TROY, Ala. - The Trojan Volleyball team were defeated by the Lady Jags of South Alabama three games to one Saturday night at the Trojan Arena. The loss was part of a Sun Belt Sweep as Troy is now 0-3 against Sun Belt opponents this season.
In game one the Lady Jags out hit the Trojans as South Alabama took the game 30-26. South Alabama hit for a .343 average while the Trojans hit for only .098. Freshman Claire Murphy led the Trojans with four kills while Jenna Swilley led the Lady Jags with five.
We dug ourselves a hole by coming out flat in the first game,” said Troy head coach Patrick Nicholas. We started to work our way back into it but couldn't finish the job.”
Game two saw the Trojans improve their intensity level but still fall to the Lady Jags 30-18. The Trojans could not stop the South Alabama offense as the Lady Jags hit for an impressive .419 average. Summer Pilgrim was perfect in the game with her four kills on four attempts.
In the second game we matched their intensity but our play was just sporadic,” said Nicholas.
The Trojans came out of the break for game three with a new intensity and defeating the Lady Jags 32-30. The game itself was one for the ages as there were 14 tie scores and nine lead changes after all was said and done. Sophomore outside hitter Kendra Sytsma led the Trojan offense with five kills. The Lady Jags were led by Whitney Sanders who had eight kills in the match and hit for a .412 average.
We did a good job in game three of matching South Alabama's intensity,” said Nicholas. I was proud the way they played in game three.”
The South Alabama Lady Jags took game four from Troy as the Trojans seemed to run out of gas in the match. Troy tried to fight its way back from an early 11-2 deficit but wound up being defeated 30-21. Sytsma led the offense for the Trojans once again with five kills but her effort was matched by that of Sanders and Morgan Flarity who both had five kills for the Lady Jags.
The Trojans fall to 8-18 with the loss while the Lady Jags improve their record to 3-19. Sytsma and Murphy finished the match with 16 kills apiece while freshman Jean McCarthy added ten of her own. McCarthy also tied for the lead in digs with fellow freshman Eliza Zwettler as both finished the match with 14.
Troy will host Atlantic Sun rival Lipscomb Sunday at the Trojan Arena. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
