A familiar face on the Troy sidelines, Ben Waldrop took another step in his coaching career this spring when he was elevated to full-time status as the linebackers coach. Waldrop has been a player, student assistant and graduate assistant with the Trojans program since his arrival here in 2000.
A native of Pensacola, Fla., Waldrop played one season as a linebacker for the Trojans, appearing in all 11 games in 2001. He finished the season with 95 tackles, ranking him third on the team in that category, despite playing only as a reserve. He also recorded three sacks and 10 quarterback hurries.
He spent the 2002 season working with the video crew while completing his degree, then served as an administrative graduate assistant to the program in 2003. Last year, he worked as the graduate assistant on the defensive side of the ball.
Prior to Troy, Waldrop spent two seasons at Florida State. He was a member of two Atlantic Coast Conference championship teams and was named Defensive Scout Team Player-of-the-Year in 1997. The Seminoles won the Sugar Bowl that season and played for the national championship the next.
Waldrop attended Pensacola High School, where he was a standout linebacker. As a senior, he recorded 164 tackles, eight sacks and three interceptions, earning all-district and all-state honors.
Waldrop earned bachelor's and master's degrees in sport and fitness management from Troy in 2003 and 2005, respectively. He is the married to the former Lindsey Minnihan, who ran track and cross country for the Trojans before graduating in 2005.
