Troy Volleyball Suffers Another Setback

The Trojan Volleyball team took the Hatters of Stetson to the wire Saturday night but still fell short losing the match 3-0. The loss was painful for the Trojans because costly errors sealed their fate.Trojan Volleyball coach Patrick Nicholas was disappointed with the loss, but was encouraged by the play of his team.
"We played with heart tonight, we didn't give up," Nicholas said. "We're playing good right now but we have to cut down on the errors. They stuck together as a team and played the match with intensity from beginning to end."
In game one the Trojans and Hatters traded points back and forth throughout the game but Stetson finished off Troy on the play of DeeAnn Dempsey who finished the game with seven kills. Junior Holly Martin and Sophomore Kendra Sytsma led Troy on offense with five kills apiece while Freshmen Bridget Reidy and Eliza Zwettler led Troy defensively with four digs apiece.
Game two saw the Trojans on the cusp of victory leading Stetson 28-26 in the closing moments of the game but the Hatters rallied late to take the game 30-28. Holly Martin and Freshman Claire Murphy led Troy in kills with four kills for each player.
Bridget Reidy had nine digs which led the Trojans.
The Trojans came into game three with a new determination but errors cost Troy the game and match. Troy committed eight service errors, eight attack errors, and one blocking error which gave Stetson 17 points in the game. Troy lost the game once again by the score of 30-28. Claire Murphy had six kills to lead the Trojans.
On the night Claire Murphy and Holly Martin were impressive in defeat, with Murphy earning 14 kills and .393 hitting percentage while Martin had 13 kills and an impressive .429 hitting percentage.
"Claire and Holly had big nights," Nicholas said. "Claire had a great night last night and Holly really stepped up her play tonight."
