The Gamecocks of Jacksonville State and the Trojans of Troy University have met 19 times since Troy joined Division I in 1993. The Gamecocks have won 11 of those matches and the last three in the series.
The Trojans and Gamecocks met in the first game of the season for both teams. The Gamecocks defeated the Trojans easily 3-0. But when the two teams meet again Tuesday night the Gamecocks will be facing a different Trojan Volleyball team.
We're not the same team that we were when we played them earlier in the season,” said freshman Eliza Zwettler. I think we are going to go out and show them what Trojan Volleyball really is.”
Junior Holly Martin had similar sentiments about the rematch of the two rivals.
Everybody is really fired up for the rematch Tuesday,” said Martin. In the first game of the season we were all new to each other and we were adjusting to a new setter. We didn't play that well in the first match. Now we can show them how much we have improved.”
In the first match TROY finished the night with 20 kills, 12 assists, and 18 digs. Junior Holly Martin paced the Trojans on offense with eight kills against the Gamecocks. Jean McCarthy was second on the night with four kills of her own.
Jacksonville State doubled TROY's kill total in three games finishing the night with 40 kills, 31 assists, and 33 digs. Jax. State was led on offense by freshman Abby Breit who finished the night with nine kills. Sophomore Shari Weyer was close behind teammate Breit with eight kills on the evening.
Jacksonville State is coming off of a 3-2 victory against Ohio Valley Conference foe Tennessee Tech.
