Former Troy great Ben Fletcher enters his 14th season as an assistant coach, and his 15th season overall on the Trojan bench. He was named an assistant coach in June 2005 after helping the program while completing his degree the previous two seasons.
Â
Under head coach Phil Cunningham, Fletcher is in charge of all aspects of coaching, including recruiting. Fletcher has the distinction of being a member of both Troy squads that reached March Madness as he was a player on the 2002-03 team and a coach with the 2016-17 team.
Â
The 2016-17 season was one of the most successful not only in Fletcher’s time but Troy history. The Trojans had the most wins since the 2003-04 team, the third-most Sun Belt wins ever, the largest wins improvement in program history and the most non-conference wins since 2002-03.
Â
The past four seasons have seen the emergence of Wesley Person. Person has been named the Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year (2014-15), secured a spot on the All-Sun Belt Second Team (2015-16) and All-Sun Belt Third Team (2016-17, 2017-18).
Â
Under Fletcher’s guidance in 2013-14, Hunter Williams made 98 3-pointers, setting the Troy single-season record, which was previously held by Fletcher.  Highlighting the season was a 85-81 win over Georgia State in Trojan Arena on ESPN2, which was the Panthers’ lone loss in Sun Belt play.
Â
Fletcher has been instrumental in the Trojans’ rise in the Sun Belt Conference, culminating in Troy’s first Sun Belt title in 2010 and second straight postseason berth.
Â
He was influential in helping guide the Trojans to a 14-4 league record for the 2008-09 season, highlighted by wins over every member of the Sun Belt Conference – Troy was the only team to accomplish that feat. The Trojans also posted a 10-game improvement in conference record over the previous year.
Â
After playing in the College Basketball Invitational (CBI) in 2009, Fletcher helped lead the Trojans to a Sun Belt regular season championship in 2009-10 and a National Invitation Tournament (NIT) berth. Troy fell to Ole Miss on the road in what was the second NIT game in program history.
Â
Prior to joining the coaching ranks, Fletcher was one of the greatest players in Troy’s Division I history. A native of Selma, Fletcher played for the Trojans from 2001-03, starting 58 of the 59 games during that span. He averaged 13.4 points per game during his career and was known for his 3-point shooting ability.
Â
He was named first-team All-Atlantic Sun his senior year (2002-03), helping the Trojans to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance at the Division I level. During that season, he made a Troy Division I single-season record 92 3-pointers, which was broken by Hunter Williams, who played for Fletcher. Fletcher finished his career with 160 made 3-pointers, the sixth most in Troy’s Division I history.
Â
While completing his degree requirements, Fletcher worked as a student assistant coach with the Trojans following his playing career. He earned a B.S. in sport and fitness management from Troy in 2003.
