David Felix has become synonymous with Troy Basketball as he enters his 34th season at Troy, his 29th as an assistant coach.
During the past 28 seasons, Felix has helped guide the Trojans from a Division II national power to a Division I program that competed for a conference title each season as a member of the Atlantic Sun and now on to the team’s place as a rising program in the Sun Belt Conference.
A native of Greenwood, Ind., Felix began his career at Troy in 1973, working his way into the starting lineup as a freshman for then head coach Wes Bazilia. His career took off from there as he became one of the top players in Troy history. He is sixth on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,469 points.
He was named to the all-conference team three times and led the Trojans to the 1977 Gulf South Conference title.
An outstanding ball handler, he still holds the school's all-time record for steals (251) and is second all-time in assists (625). He averaged 13.9 points per game during his career.
He has been a key part of a staff that directed four trips to the Division II national tournament (1988, 1991-93). Troy teams have been to two Division II Final Fours (1988, 1993), won three NCAA scoring titles (1991-1992, 1996), and led the nation in three-pointers made per game six times (1992, 1994-96, 2004, 2005).
Felix also was a vital part of the staff that led Troy to its first Division I NCAA Tournament in 2003 and an NIT invitation a year later.
Known as an outstanding recruiter, Felix has helped land all of Troy's All-America performers in Darryl Thomas, Anthony Reed and Terry McCord. He has also brought in 23 other all-conference performers.
Felix has also helped lead the Trojans to other titles as well, including four Atlantic Sun Conference titles. Troy claimed the Gulf South Conference title in 1992 and the East Coast Conference title in 1994, its first season as Division I member.
Troy also appeared in the A-Sun title game in the school’s last two seasons in the league, including a championship in 2004.
After earning his degree in physical education from Troy in 1977, Felix stayed at Troy for two years as a graduate assistant coach for Bazilia. During that time, he worked on his master's degree, which he received from Troy in 1979 in secondary education.
Following the completion of his master's, Felix spent two very successful seasons at Lowndes Academy in Lowndesboro, Ala. He had a 53-11 record, with his second team finishing third in the state. For his efforts, Felix earned Alabama Private School Coach of the Year honors.
Felix is married to the former Mary Phillips, who is a Troy alumnae from Montgomery, Ala. They have two adult children, Drew and Addy.
