Brad Phillips enters his eighth season as the pitching coach. Under his guidance, two Troy pitchers have been named Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Year, one named Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year and one named Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year.
Last season, Phillips coached Andrew Crane to one of the most impressive breakout seasons by a Trojan in recent memory. Crane set a school and Sun Belt record with 40 consecutive scoreless innings and ranked fourth nationally with a 1.47 ERA.
In 2016, the Troy pitching staff ranked third in the Sun Belt with a 3.79 ERA and saw seniors Grant Bennett and Lucas Brown land on All-Sun Belt Team for the second straight season.
Phillips was rewarded for his efforts as he was named the 2016 Alabama Baseball Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year.
Marc Skinner took Freshman of the Year honors in 2014 as Troy’s closer after posting a 6-1 record with a league-best 1.52 ERA. He also recorded five saves.
In 2013, Shane McCain was named SBC Pitcher of the Year with a 9-1 record and 3.48 ERA. In 2011, Tyler Ray ran away with the award after posting a 12-0 record and 2.39 ERA.
The Trojans finished 2013 with a staff ERA of 3.82, which was the second best mark in the Sun Belt Conference and over two runs better than the previous season. The pitching staff also lowered its opponents’ batting average by over 30 points.
In 2013, Phillips tutored reliever Nate Hill, who finished ranked fifth in the country with 11.14 strikeouts per nine innings. As a staff, Troy was fifth in the nation in strikeouts per nine innings with 8.6.
Under Phillips in 2012, Hill set a Troy then-school record for appearances with 35 (Thomas Austin’s 32 appearances that season would have also set a record). Hill would again set the record for appearances with 37 in 2013.
Phillips became the Trojans’ pitching coach in August 2010 after a successful head coaching career at Niceville (Fla.) High School and Charles Henderson (Ala.) High School. Phillips was no stranger to the Troy baseball program, having served as a volunteer assistant under Pierce during the 2003-04 seasons.
Phillips, a native of Hazel Green, Ala., in Madison County, played collegiately at Gadsden State Community College and the University of Montevallo before completing his degree at Troy in 2004. He took over the program at CHHS that same year and led the team to four consecutive AHSAA playoff appearances.
During his time at Charles Henderson he posted a record of 114-59 and was named the Class 5A Region 2 Coach of the Year four times. He was named the Dothan Eagle Super 12 Coach of the Year in 2008.
Phillips took over the program at Niceville (Fla.) High School for the 2009 season and took his team to consecutive state playoff appearances while posting a combined record of 43-16. He was named the 2009 Northwest Florida Daily News Coach of the Year.
Phillips is married to the former Peyton Marsh of Madison, Ala. The couple, who was married in December 2010, has a daughter, Piper Belle and a son, Scout.
