GAINESVILLE, Fla. - No. 3 seed Troy surged back from down 6-2 to top No. 3 Miami 9-6 in Saturday's elimination game at the Gainesville Regional.
The Trojans' rally started with an RBI fielder's choice from Drew Nelson in the fifth before Troy evened the score with a three-run sixth. Jabe Boroff led off against AJ Ciscar with a 433-foot blast to left, one pitch after hitting one just left of the foul pole. Houston Markham, Aaron Piasecki and Josh Pyne each singled to load the bases, and Troy evened it on a wild pitch and a sac fly from Jimmy Janicki.
The power surge continued for Troy against lefty Jake Dorn in the seventh. Boroff deposited his second homer to left field, while Markham crushed his second homer of the season to right field right after. Troy added some insurance in the eighth on an RBI single by Steven Meier after Pyne's fourth base hit of the day and a walk by Blake Cavill.
The Trojans chased Miami right-hander Lazaro Collera after three innings, tallying six hits and two runs against the sophomore. Steven Meier's RBI single in the first was Troy's third hit of the opening frame, while Josh Pyne opened the third inning with a solo shot to left.
Troy starter Tommy Egan cruised through his first 3.2 innings before the Hurricanes put up four two-out runs in the fourth. The Hurricanes capitalized on a one-out hit batter as Alex Sosa hit a two-run blast off the batter's eye before a single by Alonzo Alvarez kept the inning going.
Trojan second baseman Sean Darnell fielded a grounder that deflected off Egan but sailed his throw to first to put runners on second and third before a two-run single by Gabriel Milano added two unearned runs to the Troy right-hander's line.
Egan finished with six runs and four earned runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings as Miami's Max Galvin added a solo shot with two outs in the fifth before the senior exited after a Derek Williams single. When the Trojans turned to Zach Crotchfelt, the Canes added another run when Williams scored on an RBI double by Sosa.
Crotchfelt settled in and got Troy to the finish line, allowing just one hit in the sixth inning before retiring 11 straight hitters through the ninth. The Trojan left-hander struck out one hitter and got the final out on a 97 MPH fastball for a weak ground ball to Pyne at third base.
