Troy Drops Gainesville Regional Opener to Miami

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - No. 3 seed Troy dropped its opening game of the Gainesville Regional 10-5 to No. 2 seed Miami.
The Trojans evened the score at 5-5 in the top of the eighth as left field Drew Nelson launched a two-run blast just a half inning after robbing Alex Sosa with a three-run blast, but the Hurricanes snatched the momentum right back with five runs in the bottom of the frame.
Tommy Egan made just his second relief appearance of the season to start the frame, issuing a pair of doubles, a walk and a single before leaving with one out. Cooper Ellingworth relieved him as Miami added three more runs on a sac fly and a two-run double by Brandon DeGoti.
Troy lefty Benjamin Stubbs kept Miami off the board through two innings before the Hurricanes put up a four-spot in the third. Shortstop Vance Sheahan homered to open the frame, while Derek Williams made Troy pay for a hit-by-pitch and an error with a three-run blast.
Miami southpaw Rob Evans lasted five innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four. Evans started with three zeroes before Troy scraped across a run with a two-out, two-strike RBI single by Sean Darnell in the fourth. The Trojans cut the lead to 4-3 in the fifth after a pair of singles by Aaron Piasecki, and Josh Pyne led to a two-run double down the first base line by Blake Cavill.
Stubbs exited after a one-out walk in the sixth, finishing with four runs and three earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out six.
Righty Dylan Alonso entered and got a walk, a strikeout and another walk to load the bases before getting out of the jam by getting two-hole hitter Max Galvin to fly out to right field. Alonso would issue another run in the seventh after a leadoff walk to Williams before the Miami right fielder took two bases on a wild pitch and scored on an overthrow to third.

Troy faces No. 4 seed Rider in Saturday's 2 p.m. CT elimination game. The winner will face the loser of Saturday evening's game between No.1 seed Florida and No. 2 seed Miami on Sunday.

- The game began at 10:15 p.m. after a four-hour, 15-minute weather delay.
- Troy used the same batting order for the seventh consecutive game. It's the first time since 2018 that the Trojans have kept the same lineup in seven straight games.
- Benjamin Stubbs struck out the side in the fourth inning. It was his fifth time striking out the side this season.
- Steven Meier extended his reached base streak to 15 games.
- Aaron Piasecki extended his hitting streak to six games and reached base streak to 12 games.
- Blake Cavill had his second two-double game this season. His first came on April 11 at Texas State.
- Drew Nelson's game-tying two-run homer in the eighth inning was his sixth homer of the season. It traveled 408 feet with an exit velocity of 101 MPH.
