LAFAYETTE, La. – In an eight-inning game that lasted nearly five hours with a weather delay, the Troy softball team fell 5-4 to Louisiana. The Trojans (23-14, 5-7 SBC) outhit Louisiana 11-7 but were walked off by the Ragin' Cajuns (22-17, 5-7 SBC).
Freshman Presley Ivey came up big numerous times in the game, finishing 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs and a sacrifice fly. Mia Tidmore logged her fourth straight multi-hit game, going 3-for-5 from the leadoff spot. Additionally, Megan Loftis went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Ella Cunningham roped a single to center field in the seventh inning, and Kalee Rochinski reached on a walk before lightning delayed the game. After a lengthy delay, the game started back up with McKinnon Howard at the dish, and the game tied 3-3.
Howard punched a single up the middle to load the bases. Ivey hit a sacrifice fly to center field to give Troy a 4-3 lead late. However, Louisiana tied it up in the bottom half to send it to extra innings.
The Trojans opened the eighth with back-to-back singles from Loftis and Tidmore. However, Troy couldn't take the lead. A leadoff double for the Ragin' Cajuns in the eighth put the pressure on, and Louisiana got the walk-off hit with two outs in the inning.
Looking back to the game's 1 p.m. start, both teams went scoreless in the first inning for the first time in the series, as Abby Lovell used a double play turned by Dailynn Motes to get out of the first. While Kalee Rochinski reached on a hit-by-pitch in the second, the Trojans couldn't string anything together.
Following another scoreless inning from Lovell, Motes led off the third with a single. Tidmore smoked a single off the pitcher to move runners to the corners with one out – Boswell opened the scoring, tearing an RBI single down the left field line to put Troy up 1-0.
A fourth-inning double off the bat of Presley Ivey knocked the Ragin' Cajuns starter out of the game, and Troy extended the lead to 2-0 with a line-drive single off the bat of Loftis. The Ragin' Cajuns threatened in the fourth after an error and a hit-by-pitch, but Lovell induced a ground ball to end the inning.
Rochinski reached for the sixth out of seven at-bats to that point in the weekend with another hit-by-pitch, and Sophia Jenkins drew a pinch-hit walk. Ivey came through with a two-out double to extend the lead to 3-0.
Louisiana scored two in the bottom of the fifth off an error, knocking Lovell out of the game. The Cajuns tied it up, scoring on a fielder's choice after Savannah Money entered to pitch. In the sixth, a diving play by Kiley Huffman helped Money spin a scoreless inning.
Quotable: Head Coach Eric Newell
"That one hurts, and my heart hurts for our girls. We played pretty well at times in a tough environment, and a lot of things didn't go our way. There were a lot of things that happened in that game that were challenging – I'll leave it at that. Our girls battled to the very end. I was very glad to see this game conclude, even though we weren't on the winning end of it."
