TROY, Ala. - No. 14 Troy fell 12-1 in eight innings to No. 19 Southern Miss at Riddle-Pace Field on Friday.
The Trojans were outhit 12-4, and scored their lone run of the ballgame on an RBI double by Brooks Bryan in the fourth inning. The Trojans had an opportunity for more runs in the fourth as Sean Darnell walked and Mike Bello singled to load the bases with one out, but a double play ended the inning.
On the mound, Troy starter Noah Edders went one inning, allowing three hits, three runs and two walks. After a leadoff home run in the second inning, Garrett Gainous made his first appearance on the mound since April 17 and gave the Trojans three strong innings.
Gainous allowed one run in the second, but shook the rust off by following with a pair of hitless frames in the third and fourth. Quick Hitters
Quotable - Head Coach Skylar Meade
"You just can't be down every game, and that's just what's happening right now. It doesn't take a genius to read a box score and see what's happening. The one positive we can hang our hat on was we got Gainous in there. He pitched. Was he totally dialed in? Absolutely not, he's missed a month. We've been a month without some needed innings."
