No. 14 Troy's Comeback Falls Short at Arkansas State
5/11/2025 6:57:00 PM | Baseball
Troy trailed 5-3 entering the eighth inning and got it within one after Peyton Watts followed Dillon Kuehl's leadoff walk with an RBI triple that was inches away from clearing the right-center wall. Steven Meier gave Troy runners on the corners and no outs, as the Red Wolves were unsuccessful on its tag out attempt of Watts on Meier's grounder to third. Those few inches on Watts' triple were the difference as Watts was out at home on a Houston Markham bunt before Blake Cavill grounded into a double play.
A-State put two runs across in the bottom of the frame, and the Trojans got it within one run again as Brooks Bryan blasted a two-run home run over the right field wall with one out, his team best 12th of the season. Red Wolf reliever Jack Nelson responded by retiring the next two Trojans to end the ballgame.
Troy struck first in the second inning, getting a two-run single from Meier and a sac fly by Cavil, knocking starter Jelle van der Lelie out of the ballgame. The Red Wolves responded with three runs of their own against Trojan righty Luke Lyon, who finished with nine hits and four earned runs in 2.2 innings pitched after surrendering another run in the third. A-State added another in the fifth against Grayson Stewart, who pitched 2.1 innings with four hits and one run.
The Trojans move to 37-16 on the season and sit in third-place in the Sun Belt standings at 18-9. Troy has clinched at least the three-seed in the Sun Belt Tournament, and can move into second with a sweep over Southern Miss in next week's final regular season series.
