Troy Falls to Coastal Carolina in Sun Belt Men’s Golf Semifinals

MADISON, Miss. – Troy got off to a strong start Thursday morning in the semifinals of the Sun Belt Match Play Championship, but Coastal Carolina rallied on the back nine and defeated the Trojans, 3-2, at the Annadale Golf Course.

Brantley Scott and Lee Poppell picked up individual victories for the Trojans, as Scott won 4&3, while Poppell picked up a 2&1 victory. Scott dropped two of the first four holes but tied the match with a birdie on the seventh and won three of the next four holes to grab a commanding lead after the 11^th.

Poppell jumped on Trace McDonald from the start, winning the first two holes before McDonald closed the gap to one after a birdie on the fourth. The score remained that way until Poppell birdied the par-4 No. 13 to go up two.

Nick Fowlkes held a two-hole advantage after Coastal's Drew Sykes bogeyed the par-3 eighth, but Sykes won six of the final eight holes to win 3&2. Pablo Gracia led 1-up after four holes, and the match was tied after the seventh. Leading by one hole after 13, Trey Crenshaw won on the 14^th and 16^th for another Coastal point, while Max Bengtsson defeated Jake Springer 3&2 after Springer took the opening hole.

Troy entered Thursday's play ranked No. 51 in the country, which will slot the Trojans in NCAA Regional play. The NCAA Selection Show airs Wednesday, April 30, at noon on Golf Channel.
