POINT CLEAR, Ala. – Thanks to a steady round across the board and dominant play on the par-5 holes, the Troy women's golf team is in fifth place following Monday's opening round of the Sun Belt Championship at the Lakewood Golf Course.

The Trojans are just a shot back of the all-important fourth spot, as the top four teams following 54 holes of stroke play advance to match play to decide who earns the league's automatic qualifier spot into the NCAA Regionals.

Troy shot 7-under as a team on the par 5s on Monday, tied for best in the field, paced by Manya Saini's 3-under and Laura Fangmeyer's 2-under. Alyssa Mercado led the field with a 1-under on the par 3s, while Victoria Stutts is sixth in the field with four birdies.

No. 33 Georgia Southern shot 1-under and is the day one leader, followed by South Alabama (+2), Coastal Carolina (+3), ULM (+8) and Troy (+9). The leaderboard is tight in the middle as just five shots separate fourth and 10^th place heading into Tuesday's second round.

The Trojans got off to a blistering start as all five players birdied the opening hole and Fangmeyer made the turn at 2-under before finishing the day 1-over and tied for 11^th place. Saini was 2-over at the turn and 5-over heading into the final three holes before holing out for eagle on the par-5 16^th and carding one of two Troy birdies on the 18^th.

Stutts was responsible for Troy's other birdie on the final hole of the day as she and Saini are tied for 19^thplace at 2-over; Stutts also finished strong with a birdie on 16. Mathilda Ringblom is tied for 34^th place after a 76 to open her first Sun Belt Championship, while Mercado is a shot back in a tie for 44^th place.

Troy will play alongside ULM and Arkansas State in Tuesday's second round beginning at 8:45 a.m. from the No. 1 tee.
