Men’s Tennis Wins on Senior Day

TROY, Ala. – The Troy men's tennis team closed out its regular season on a high note, as it defeated Georgia State 4-1 on Senior Day at the Lunsford Tennis Complex on Saturday afternoon.
Troy (18-7, 4-3 SBC) finished the regular season on a four-match winning streak to take momentum into the Sun Belt Tournament, which is set to get underway next week. Prior to today's match, the Trojans recognized seniors Nicolas Simkin, Noah Martens and Vicente Arbelaez.
The Trojans got off to a strong start in doubles play, as Simkin and Martens paired up for a 6-2 victory. Georgia State (5-14, 2-5 SBC) responded with a 7-5 win at No. 2 and a 6-3 win at No. 3 to take the 1-0 lead. Going into the match, Troy was 3-6 when losing the doubles point.
In singles, however, it was all Troy. Martens started thing s off with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 3 to secure his 11thwin of the spring and even the match at 1-1. Luciano Alcocer followed on court five with a 6-3, 6-3 win to give Troy the advantage. Alcocer finishes the regular season with an impressive 14-4 record in dual play. Simkin finished his final home match of his Troy career with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 2.
The Trojans clinched the match victory with a 6-2, 7-5 win from Hiiro Sakamoto at No. 4. The win marked his 20th of the season, capping off a remarkable first regular season for the Japanese freshman.
The remaining singles matches went unfinished.

With some teams still with a match to go on Sunday, Troy will wait to find out its placement in the Sun Belt Tournament, which is set to open next week in Rome, Ga.
