TROY, Ala. – In front of a crowd of over 4,000 people at Trojan Arena, the Troy men's basketball honored its four graduating student-athletes and defeated Coastal Carolina, 83-66, in the home finale on Saturday afternoon.
Prior to tipoff Troy honored seniors Tayton Conerway, Theo Seng, Randarius Jones and Braydon Whitaker. Head coach Scott Cross started all four players, marking the first career starts for Whitaker and Jones.
Troy (18-10, 11-5 SBC) started slow and trailed Coastal Carolina (9-20, 2-14 SBC) 6-12 with 15:07 left in the opening half. The Trojans offense began to wake up and they went on a 10-3 run to take a 16-15 lead. After the Chanticleers jumped back ahead 18-16, the Trojans exploded on a 13-1 run to take a 10-point lead.
With it seeming like Troy was close to busting open the game, Coastal Carolina responded with 14-4 run of its own to bring the two teams tied into halftime at 33.
Both teams shot well to open the game, as the Trojans sat 46.4 percent when heading to the locker room, while the Chanticleers shot 41.9 percent. Jackson Fields had eight-first half while going 2-2 from distance. Noah Amenhauser had a game-high 13 points at the break.
It was the first time this season that Troy was tied at halftime of a game. Entering the night the Trojans had led at the break in 19 games and tailed in eight.
The back-and-forth play carried over into the first 10 minutes of the final home half of the season, as Troy led 53-51 with 9:37 left in regulation. Something clicked on both ends of the court for the Trojans, however, as they went on a 15-4 run over the next three minutes to jump ahead 68-55.
Over the final six minutes, the Troy lead never fell below 10.
Conerway had one of his best halves all season in the final 20 minutes, scoring 19 of his 21 points on 8-9 shooting. The senior guard from Burleson, Texas, closed out his final game in Trojan Arena with 21 points, eight assists and six rebounds. He's just the second player in Troy's D-I program history with 20 or more points, eight or more assists and six or more rebounds in a game. Nelson Phillips did it against SUNO in 2022.
Also having a big second half was Thomas Dowd , who had 13 points and six rebounds, and Myles Rigsby, who added 11 points.
The Trojans outscored Coastal Carolina 50-33 in the second half. It's the first time Troy has score 50 or more points in a second half since it had 50 against LaGrange on Dec. 17. Troy shot 59.3 percent in the second half, while holding Coastal Carolina to 40.0 percent.
Dowd finished the night with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Rigsby had 20 points and four rebounds. Saturday was Rigsby's third game with 20 or more points this season, while it marked Dowd's 11th double-digit scoring game.
Troy finished the night shooting 52.7 percent (29-55) from the field and 37.5 percent (12-32) from distance. The Trojans are now 7-0 (2-0 SBC) when shooting over 50 percent this season. Troy is also 9-0 (3-0 SBC) when scoring 80 or more points.
In addition to the scoring, the Trojans finished the night with 16 assists and just nine turnovers. Troy is 13-2 this year when recording 15 or more assists, and 4-1 when turning it over 10 or fewer times.
For the fourth straight season under Cross, Troy finishes the year with double-digit wins at Trojan Arena.
Quotable – head coach Scott Cross
"That was a great way to send those seniors out. Very proud of our guys. Coastal is playing good basketball, they had a great win against Southern Miss on the road, who is tough to beat on their home court. Their big man, Noah Amenhuaser is one of the best bigs in the league… I am thankful to the good Lord that our guys were a little bit tougher in the second half and we were able to get it done."
