TROY, Ala. – Coming off a strong fall season, the Troy men's golf team opens its spring season Monday and Tuesday at the Border Olympics hosted by Houston at the Laredo Country Club in Laredo, Texas.
Troy put itself in position for a meaningful spring with its solid fall season that saw the Trojans finish ranked No. 81 nationally, which is hovering near the at-large bubble for the NCAA Regionals.
"We're super excited to get back to competition," head coach Clay Bounds said. "It's been a while since we've been in a tournament and our guys are ready. We played six rounds of qualifying at some high-level golf courses to get us to our top five for this week."
A big name will make his return to the lineup to open the spring as Brantley Scott will make his debut after missing the fall due to injury. An NCAA qualifier in 2023, Scott battled injuries throughout the 2023-24 season before a strong 2024 summer.
"It's a huge boost to have him back in the lineup," Bounds said. "He was a great teammate while he sat out the fall; when we won at Louisiana Tech, Brantley was at the facility at 1:30 a.m. when we got back in town to celebrate with the guys. He's pain-free, super competitive and is going to make us better."
In addition to the victory at the Argent Financial Classic, Troy turned in a third-place finish at the Everett Buick GMC Classic hosted by Little Rock behind an individual tournament victory by Jake Springer.
Springer finished the fall under-par, with a -0.92 score vs. par, while Nick Fowlkes was close behind at -0.25. The pair combined for 12 rounds under par, while Troy shot six rounds in the red as a team in the fall, which was 50 percent of their 12 total rounds. As a team, Troy finished the fall with a -1.67 stroke average.
Pablo Gracia and Lee Poppell will round out Bounds' lineup as the pair combined to shoot in the red on nine occasions and finished the fall with a 0.36 and 0.42 stroke average, respectively.
Teams will play foursomes for Monday's 36 holes as the Trojans will play alongside Houston Christian, New Mexico State and Wright State.
