Troy Crushes First Day of ITA Southern Regional

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – In the first day of competition at the ITA Southern Regional, the Troy men's tennis team put together a 10-2 record and saw four players advance through the singles qualifying draw to earn a place in the main draw.
The opening day featured the singles qualifying draw, with six Trojans battling to join Hiiro Sakamoto and Yeray Andres Pastor in the main draw. Stephan Tavares Noale, Luciano Alcocer, Thiago Drozdowski and Louis Boilevin each won two matches to advance – Alcocer and Boilevin bested SEC opponents in the process.
After earning his first collegiate win last weekend, Tavares Noale opened the day with a huge win, dropping a seeded opponent from Jacksonville State 6-3, 6-3. Tavares Noale took down Tulane's AJ Mercer 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 to propel himself into the main draw and continue his strong start.
In his first match of the day, Alcocer made quick work of his opponent before rematching Ole Miss player Kai Milburn, who he beat on Sunday. Alcocer bested Milburn for the second time on the week to seal a spot in the main draw.
Drozdowski was the third Trojan to clinch a spot in the main draw on the day. The sophomore opened his day with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Alabama A&M's Juwan Bae. He capped the day off with a win over Sun Belt Conference foe David Simeonov – the Louisiana player retired due to an injury with Drozdowski holding a third-set lead.
Boilevin won a three-set thriller to start his day, besting Lucius Soller of Jacksonville State 7-5, 3-6, 6-2. In the final round of the qualifying draw, he took down Mississippi State's Marshall Landry 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 to make it into the main draw.
Henrique de Brito fell in his opening match, but bested Samford's Charlie Piegza 6-2, 7-5 in the consolation draw.
Although Ausias Martin Melo dropped his first match of the day, he earned a win in the consolation bracket. He'll look to carry the momentum over to doubles play tomorrow, where he'll team up with Sakamoto to take on a duo from Jacksonville State.
The Trojans start play in the doubles main draw Friday, with four total pairings competing. Alcocer and Andres Pastor have a bye into the second round, but every other Troy duo will see the court in the round of 64.
