Troy Takes Down South Alabama, 65-55

TROY, Ala. – In front of the third largest crowd in Trojan Arena history, the Troy men's basketball team toppled the top team in the Sun Belt, South Alabama, 65-55 on Saturday night thanks to ferocious defense and timely scoring.
A week after dropping a close battle to South Alabama (14-6, 6-2 SBC), Troy (12-7, 5-3 SBC) exacted revenge in front of 5,041 people. It was the largest crowd of the season and was just 79 short of the biggest crowd in program history.
The Trojans came out of the gates on fire on offense in the first 10 minutes, as it led 19-8 at the second media timeout with 8:38 remaining in the first half. Cooper Campbell and Thomas Dowd each buried a pair of threes during that stretch.
Troy's lead was pushed all the way to 12 – 32-20 – with 4:15 left before the break. South Alabama found some rhythm on offense and closed the half on a 6-0 run to take just a six-point deficit into the locker room.
The three ball was flying for the Trojans during the first 20 minutes, as Troy made eight 3-pointers, tying a season-high for the most made threes in a half this season. Campbell made three from beyond the arc in the first half while leading the team with nine points. Tayton Conerway had six assists at the break. South Alabama was limited to 3-12 from distance in the first half, while Troy was 8-21.
The second half was a lot of back and forth, as both teams traded hoops for much of the final 20 minutes. South Alabama hung around for most of the game but Troy's lead never dwindled below four.
With 1:19 left in the game, Conerway hit a dagger-three to push the Troy lead to 10. Myles Rigsby and Jackson Fields buried a pair of late free throws to ice the game.
Rigsby was fantastic for Troy all night, as he finished with a team-high 15 points on 5-10 shooting to go along with six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Also joining Rigsby in double-digit scoring were Campbell (12) and Conerway (10).
Conerway also added nine assists, five rebounds and five steals to cap off another impressive Sun Belt showing.
Troy finished the night shooting 35.9 percent from the field, including 30 percent from deep. Troy dished out 18 assists, and its defense held South Alabama to 39.2 percent from the field and 27.3 percent from three.
The difference in the game came on the boards, as Troy outrebounded South Alabama 41-35 and had 20 offensive rebounds, the second-most in a game this season. The Trojans outscored the Jaguars 16-7 in second-chance points. Fields led the Trojans with 10 rebounds, including five on offense.
Jayden Cooper led South Alabama with a game-high 17 points. He was the only player to score in double-digits for the Jaguars.

"Our guys were locked in defensively. You could see it in their eyes. That's the look that we have to have for us to be the best team possible. Before the game, I put an eight and 14 on the board and asked what those numbers meant. Nobody knew. We're eight points away from being undefeated in conference play and 14 points away from being 16-3. So I asked them, 'Which possession do you want to take off?' Tonight, I don't think we took many off."
