Men’s Golf Opens Strong at Argent Financial Classic

CHOUDRANT, La. – Troy men's golf is in fifth place following Sunday's opening round of the Argent Financial Classic at the Squire Creek Country Club; the Trojans shot 1-over as a team and find themselves just three shots off the pace.
"Great battle today from the guys," head coach Clay Bounds said. "The conditions were tough and windy, especially in the afternoon wave. We've got a lot more in the tank for tomorrow's round."
The Trojans were the last team on the course Sunday and came out swinging, led by under-par front nines from Jason Quinlan (35) and Pablo Gracia (35). Nick Fowlkes shot 1-under on the back nine (holes one through nine for the Trojans) after shooting even over his first nine holes.
Fowlkes finished with three birdies on the day and is tied for 10th place overall, while Lee Poppell is a shot back in a tie for 19th place. Poppell carded three birdies on his back nine to shoot 2-under after making the turn at 2-over, despite three birdies in his first nine holes.
Troy shot 289 as a team and is just three shots back of South Alabama and Rice, which are tied for first place at 2-under par. Houston sits in third place at 1-under, followed by Louisiana in fourth place at ever-par.
Gracia and Quinlan settled at 73 for the day and are tied for 31st place. Gracia ended the day with an eagle on the par-5 ninth, while Quinlan carded three birdies in his round. Jake Springer rounded out the field for the Trojans in a tie for 46th place at 2-over.
Troy will play Monday's second round beginning at 11:20 a.m. along with Louisiana and Louisiana Tech.
