Troy Takes Down Eastern Washington in Season Opener

TROY, Ala. - Troy opened its 2024 season in exciting fashion Thursday night, scoring a 77th-minute goal to defeat Eastern Washington 2-1 at the Troy Soccer Complex.
The goal came on Troy's seventh corner kick of the game, with sophomore Danielle Trovato connecting with senior captain Delaney Wells for a goal inside the box. The goal was Wells' fourth shot of the game, which marks a new career-high for the Flower Mound, Texas native.
Each team finished the game with 16 shots and Troy had eight corner kicks to EWU's seven. The Trojans really put the pressure on the Eagles in the second half, getting six of those corner kicks in the final 45 minutes.
"I felt that in the second half we tightened up," head coach Stuart Gore said. "We got our momentum back and we pushed in the latter stages of the game."
The breakout star of the game was redshirt freshman Georgia Mulholland, a transfer from Baylor. In her first collegiate game, Mulholland went top-right for her first collegiate goal on an assist from fellow transfer Kat Vassilounis in the 27th minute. Mulholland had another chance later in the first half, hitting a shot off the crossbar.
"I was shocked," Mulholland said. "This was my first collegiate game, and it's also a new position for me. I came from playing center-back to outside-mid. I'm just really excited."
Eastern Washington closed the first half with some aggression on the offensive end, notching three corner kicks in the final five minutes and had Isabelle Herting score its only goal of the game in the 43rd minute.
Une Georgsen also had an impressive game in goal for the Trojans, saving six shots which ties a career high.
The Trojans will be back in action on the road next week, where they'll travel to Macon, Ga., to take on Mercer at 6 p.m. on August 22.
